Dr. Scott Allen

Dr. Scott Allen will be the keynote speaker for the 2008 Student Leadership Development Conference. His keynote is called Unpacking Leadership is a journey into the many aspects of effective leadership. This fast-paced and light-hearted address combines cutting edge leadership theory (e.g., emotional intelligence, transformational leadership) with concrete stories and experiences any college student can relate to.  Not your standard “behind the podium” keynote, Dr. Allen uses, humor, music, PowerPoint, video and interactive activities to make the concepts come to life. In addition, he offers participants an opportunity to reflect upon their own development as a leader and helps them think through how they can better impact their organization and the campus community.

Scott J. Allen, Ph.D. (B.S., University of Minnesota; M.Ed., Xavier University; Ph.D., Antioch University) started his career in the not-for-profit sector, developing award-winning programs designed especially for the needs of emerging leaders. He went on to work for a medical center in Kentucky managing its leadership development efforts. In 2005, Scott formed the Center for Leader Development, an organization created to provide resources, tools, and services to businesses, organizations, and schools seeking to build leadership capacity in their employees, members or students.

Scott is a visiting assistant professor at John Carroll University where he teaches strategic management, organizational behavior, business communication, management development and human resources. In addition, he served as a Presidential Fellow at Case Western Reserve University where he taught Leadership: Theory and Practice. He is published in the Encyclopedia of Leadership and co-authored A Charge Nurse’s Guide:Navigating the Path of Leadership a leadership book for health care professionals. Scott and his co-authors have two books slated for publication in February/March 2008, both on the topic of developing leadership capacity in others. The first, co authored with Mitch Kusy, is The Little Book of Leadership: 50 Tips to Accelerate Leader Potential in Others (Moonlight Publishing). The second is Emotionally Intelligent Leadership: A Guide for College Students (Jossey-Bass) and is co-authored with Marcy Shankman.

Scott is a graduate of The Art and Practice of Leadership Development - an executive education program of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In addition, Scott has been published in the Leadership Review, The OD Journal and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP) Leadership Journal. He recently completed a book chapter for CELAP entitled A Review on Leadership Education and Development Outside China and is a contributing author to the soon to be published Key Themes on Leadership Studies.

Scott is an associate with the Larry Morrow Group and is involved with the Institute for Creative Leadership, LeaderShape, the International Leadership Association, Organization Development Institute, and the International Coach Federation. Scott serves on the boards of the Cleveland Coach Federation, and the Organization Development Connection.
